The Life Story Project

New York Times called “The Stories that Bind Us” about the power of personal stories to give us strength in challenging times. The article became a viral sensation and inspired him to start a weekly personal history project with his ailing father. Every week, Bruce emailed his dad a question; eight years later, Bruce’s dad had completed a 65,000-word memoir, one story at a time.

From this beginning, Bruce created The Life Story Project. He has since gathered hundreds of life stories from Americans in all 50 states. These stories include people who lost limbs, lost homes; changed careers, changed religions; got sober, got out of bad marriages. With a team of twelve, Bruce then spent a year coding these stories, looking for patterns to help all of us in times of change. In 2021, he published a bestselling book about this experience, Life Is in the Transitions: Mastering Change at Any Age. The book was featured on GMA, Today, CNN, and MSNBC, and excerpted in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. “One of those books that’s so profoundly aligned with the zeitgeist that you end up underlining the whole book,” wrote Arianna Huffington in Thrive Global. “Bruce Feiler is the perfect person to lead us on this journey.”

Bruce has been a friend of Storyworth for many years, and, inspired by his experience, we teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind product. Bruce has asked hundreds of thousands of questions over his distinguished career, even more since he’s devoted his life to encouraging others to share their life stories. He’s a master at getting people to open up. We asked Bruce to collect the most effective questions he knows and to curate a special, year-long list of topics and themes that will help loved ones share their best stories and find the most meaning in their lives.

This exclusive gift is a beautiful way to share a Life Story Project with your family and to create a lasting keepsake.

Get started

Ten years. Millions of stories.

I chose the subject of the book to be mostly about my life so that it can be handed down to grandchildren and their children. Nowadays families are spread out and this is certainly one way to keep ancestral history alive. I’m so thrilled with the end product and am proud to gift my friends and family with copies."

Yvonne,

Storyworth is more than just a book, more than a collection of stories. It's the gift of time you spend with family uncovering those stories. There has never been a gift that has held more meaning or value to me.”

Adrianne,

I want you to know how much I love Storyworth. You can choose from existing questions or write your own. Discover what your mother's childhood was like. Ask your mother-in-law about your spouse as a child. The possibilities are endless. I subscribed my mom to the service and we both love it. Fair warning, though, you may cry, laugh, or get lost in some thoughts while reading the answers you get to your questions. I truly can't imagine a more thoughtful gift or one that has so much potential value."
