When he was a kid, Don’s father entered a contest run by their neighborhood grocery store. The winner could take home all the money they could carry, but there was a catch: the prize money was all in coins. In this episode, Don talks to his daughter about what it was like to watch his father compete in the race, and how those winnings changed their life.
What I remember best is him getting home and spilling the coins out on the table and saying, let's sort these and get them where we can figure out what we've got, we had a small kitchen, uh, you know, what fifties retro dining looks like the chrome edge tables and chrome chairs. We had a table like that was like a three by five table and we just cleared everything off and dumped the coins on top of that table. And we began sorting them. And to pennies and nickels and dimes.
And all of a sudden we had more money than we, we had ever seen. We had those coins around for a good while on the table before we cashed them in. We had all kinds of valuable coins in that collection. You know, Indian head pennies and Buffalo nickels.
