When Charles’s father passed away, he wanted to write an obituary that would capture the unique and lively person his father was. In the end, he did such a good job that the resulting obituary went viral. In this episode, Charles reflects on his dad’s life and death, and talks about what he wishes he could ask his dad if he were still alive today.
There would have been a lot of things that I would ask him. I would ask him what the hell he was doing with all of this junk that was in his house so that I knew whether or not I could throw away or if I needed to finish the project. I'd ask him to teach me how to sharpen a knife because I found a Dozens of knives and probably just as many different types of knife sharpener.
But there was actually this almost like interview questions for your parents, like, how did you meet, you know, mom, what was going on at this time, you know, this birthday, what were you doing? And I really wish that I had done that because I have these stories of my dad that I remember by accident. And I can only imagine how much more I would have if I got him to tell those stories on purpose. I think that everybody should do that.
